A coaching client of ours recently said, ‘I just don’t feel like me anymore and I don’t know why.’ Now Jane (let’s call her Jane to respect confidentiality) is a very successful business woman. Her manufacturing company which produces wire racking for warehouses is operating well and she has a productive workforce of over 200 people. Her marriage is stable and happy, her two children are doing well in school and family holidays are frequent and enjoyed by the whole family. To the outside observer, Jane appears to have the perfect life. How dare she express dissatisfaction and unhappiness!
This situation is delicate and requires the coach to firstly be able to really connect with Jane and then to understand in detail what is really going on in her model of reality. To accomplish this the coach requires many well-honed skills. They need to build rapport and a coaching field to operate within, they require elegant and precise language to construct the correct questions and provide powerful reframes. What they need most is the power to see though the surface problem and into the deep structure and then apply a coaching approach which guides the client out of the problem and into a new reality.
Do you know that the number one reason why coachees leave their coaches is because they just don’t feel that their coach understands them? You need to be a coach that can delve below the surface and REALLY SEE your clients.
When I applied my NLP knowledge to Jane’s problem, it became clear that the stability and success of her environment had created a level of boredom and frustration that she had never experienced before and it felt strange and so unlike her. She was beginning to identify a shift in her environment, something bubbling up under the surface, not yet visible or clear. She was starting to be aware that perhaps the old ways of doing things were about to become ineffective and something would have to change. I coached her through this realisation using a system of coaching and NLP. She changed a few things and suddenly she was excited and motivated again, ready to achieve new goals.
The accepted definition of NLP Coaching is a collaborative relationship between two people, based on trust and openness. The focus of the coach’s attention is solely on the coachee, their present situation and their desired outcomes. The coach will travel the journey alongside the coachee, assisting them to remove barriers and develop new thinking whilst they navigate towards their goals. NLP incorporates the ultimate in coaching technology.
NLP is a practical, visionary and results oriented technology of understanding and getting in control of our thinking process. It is important to understand that NLP thinking alongside its techniques and skills set enables the NLP coach to assist the coachee in taking responsibility for their results, to increase their optimistic attitude by focusing on positive internal emotional states, self-confidence, inner power, decisiveness, the ability to cope within their environment and self-reliability, using a powerful toolkit which creates a clear and precise picture of coaching.
At least one of the international regulating bodies which accredit NLP has thoroughly researched the field of Coaching as it exists today. The results illustrate beyond a shadow of a doubt that NLP already has the most advanced coaching skills and standards embedded within it. The research focused on excellence within the coaching profession by putting the highly professional standards of the world’s largest coaching organisations under the microscope, applying acute attention to detail, ensuring that each and every one of the published coaching competencies is met and in most cases exceeded within the NLP Coaching framework. This is important and clearly illustrates that the two professions sit neatly, hand in glove.

Encouraging the mastery of language and an in-depth understanding of the psychology of response, enabling the coach to create more rapid and increasingly powerful results for their coachees is at the very heart of NLP Coaching. Utilising NLP thinking and technique to create a stable psychology for the coachee means a smoother and easier journey towards achieving compelling goals.
NLP and Coaching together form a unique and highly regarded approach to personal development and growth for corporate and private clients alike. NLP teaches us how to create a more in-depth picture of what makes our coachees tick so that we can guide them towards their desired outcomes in a far more elegant and graceful manner than with coaching alone.
One of our graduates recently said, ‘the super-power of NLP is X-Ray vision, being able to see through the problem and deeper into the client than they can themselves see. We love that!
The future of NLP is coaching and the future of coaching is NLP.
