The scientific proof of the mind-body connection is relatively recent. Before indepth studies and painstaking research took place, scientists believed that neuro-transmitters only operated within the brain. Now, science has demonstrated and prooved beyond doubt that actually neuro-transmitters are present throughout the body. This is the very proof we needed to substantiate what we in NLP have known for some time, that the mind and body are inextricably connected and mutually supportive.
Neuro-transmitters are chemical in nature. Their role is to transmit messages between our neurons across the minute space between the neurons known as the synaptic gap (flash back to school biology?). So communication via these chemical messengers is happening throughout every cell in our body, though our whole neurological network and we have (1010)11 neurological connections within our system. That’s more than the number of grains of sand present on the whole of our planet!
Imagine our neurological system is like a hologram. The really interesting thing about a hologram is that if you break up the holographic plate into tiny pieces, each individual piece will still project the entire picture. Imagine now that all of our conscious and unconscious content is contained within every cell of our body carried by our neuro transmitter system. This gives us as NLP Practitioners a wonderful and exciting opportunity to positively assist the whole person, mind and body.
There are some really insightful reports regarding the mind-body connection. Michael Hutchison in the book Mega Brain tells an incredible story. A medical doctor had a good friend. They spent lots of time together and enjoyed each others company. The friend had a normal life, a family, a good job, he took part in sporting activities. When the friend passed away, the doctor carried out the autopsy. When it came to examining his friends brain, he discovered with great surprise that his friend didn’t have a brain! In the skull cavity where the brain should have resided, there was a thin layer of grey matter and the rest was just fluid. The brain stem was of course intact. What had happened in this man’s case was that in the absence of a brain, the neurological system had taken over and functioned normally.
There are many stories, some related in books such as The Heart’s Code by Paul Pearsall and A Change of Heart by Claire Sylvia, which describe how recipients of organs donated by people after their death had also received some of the memories and behaviours of their donors, even though the law prevents them from knowing anything about them. The memories came along with the donated organ, memories stored in every cell of our body.
Even in our own NLP, Time Line Therapy® and Hypnosis Trainings, we have seen wonderful changes in people’s physiology. In one training, a lady who had no feeling down her left leg due to an accident some years ago, suddenly got sensation back after releasing her negative emotions with Time Line Therapy™ Techniques and Hypnosis. It was a privilege to witness such amazing changes taking place.
At another of our Enhanced NLP Coach Practitioner Certification Training, we were joined by a lady in her mid-30’s who had been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. She was taking a cocktail of drugs and her prognosis was that she would be in a wheelchair by the time she was 40. By day 4 of the training, the condition had completely disappeared. How? She simply changed her relationship with her body and the beliefs about her diagnosis. She is now 42 and remains drug and pain free. I fact, she has actually trained as a fitness instructor and has taken her NLP Trainers Training with us too.
All this evidence means that we can fully adopt the belief that the mind-body connection exists and that we, as Practitioners of NLP can utilise this natural mechanism to help clients improve their physical as well as mental wellbeing. The Heath and Wellbeing section of our NLP Master Practitioner Programme contains a wealth of information and guidance of how to work holistically with a client, for total health and wellbeing. Now that would make you a Practitioner worth investing in, wouldn’t it?
